About Chatham-Kent Ontario

Chatham-Kent was created in 1998 by the merger of Kent County and it’s municipalities. The population centers are Chatham, Wallaceburg, Tilbury, Blenheim, Ridgetown, Wheatley and Dresden.

Chatham-Kent’s economy has a base in the agriculture and automotive industries. However, much of the automotive sectors have dwindled resulting in significant job losses in the area. Chatham’s roots in the automotive sector go back to Gray Dort Motors, one of Canada’s earliest automobile manufacturers.

Currently, the auto industry plants in the municipality include AutoLiv Canada and Mahle, both in Tilbury. From 1923 to 2011, Chatham was home to Navistar Trucks, originally International Harvester. The factory was idled in 2009 and finally closed in 2011.

Blenheim is home to RM Auctions, the world’s largest vintage automobile auction house and RM Restorations, the world’s largest vintage automobile restoration company. In 1996, Chatham became the home of Commercial Alcohols, which is the largest ethanol plant in Canada, and one of the largest in the world.

Chatham is also home to the headquarters of Union Gas, a natural gas utility and Spectra Energy company. Other energy related activities include wind farming.
