About Leamington, Ontario, Canada

Leamington is a municipality in Essex County and is the second largest municipality in the Windsor-Essex County area with a population of 28,403. It includes Point Pelee, the southernmost point of mainland Canada.

Leamington has its own tourism and attractions and is known as the tomato capital of Canada. It also has the second warmest climate in Canada, second to the lower mainland British Columbia. Leamington is located on the north shore of Lake Erie and is home to Point Pelee National Park, a major site for migrating birds and plays host to many birdwatchers from around the world. The region is known for the migration of Monarch butterflies which congregate in the fall before making their way to their winter quarters in central Mexico.

The economy of Leamington has taken a down turn as the town was previously the home of H.J. Heinz factory and in November 2013, announced it was closing its doors. A much smaller tomato processing factory, Highbury-Canco now operates in the 100 year old factory. This town is also known for its greenhouses and has the largest concentration of commercial greenhouses in all of North America. Hydroponic farming has been very successfully adopted by many greenhouse operators in Leamington.
