Local Economy

Kitchener/Waterloo is an area known for high tech industries, educational institutions and a large financial/insurance base. However, the area has a wealth of manufacturing as well, which is often overshadowed by the other sectors of the economy.

Even though, in the 2008 economic recession, many manufacturers in the area filed bankruptcy, filed proposals or were put into receivership, the area fared better than many other areas with a strong background in manufacturing due to the diversification into other economic areas.

As a result of Kitchener/Waterloo’s proximity to the Greater Toronto Area, its housing market also fared better than many other areas in South Western Ontario.
