A Road Less Travelled
Looking back at my career path, it is clear that I have taken a road that is far less travelled by my peers. Most people who become trustees in bankruptcy, fall into the work, usually while working at an accounting firm and continue for a number of years till they obtain their credentials. In some regards, that is similar for myself except I knew early on, that this was a career path that I wanted to pursue. Like most kids in high school I had no idea what I wanted to do. I was consumed with playing hockey and water-skiing and my interest in school wasn't there.

After high school I apprenticed as an auto body mechanic, but my heart wasn't into that. I continued playing hockey, which took me to Toronto one weekend, and as a young person, from a small town, the never ending nightlife was a huge attraction. The following fall I moved to Toronto and studied business, accounting. While studying in Toronto I started working part time in the insolvency field and upon graduation I sought employment opportunities in the insolvency field. However, in those days, a person had to become an accountant first, so I continued my studies at night while working during the day.

Immediately after graduating with my CMA designation, I immediately enrolled in the trustee program and have never looked back. I guess when you find what is right for you, you just charge ahead. In 1993 I returned home to Southern Ontario and continued practising and in 1996 I started Adamson & Associates Inc. I was an avid water-skier and unfortunately, the firm that I had work with for a number of years, had issues with me taking one afternoon a week off to ski, and they seemed to have an issue with my unwillingness to wear a tie.

So, in 1996, I left the firm and started up in my basement. I continued to ski and competed at five national championships. Looking back, I realize that I have taken a road far less travelled by many, but one thing has never changed. My passion about the work that I do remains the biggest asset that I can contribute to any situation. It is this passion that keeps me up at night researching topics, writing papers and it is the basis that drives me to accept many types of engagements, not just the simple ones.
